Learning Goals and Scales

I’d planned to go into school today, but we had a new AC unit installed. I watched them use a crane to move the old unit down and the new unit up on top of our two story townhouse. Watching the $4,000 unit lifted past our new car was more than a little nerve wrecking. It has been an expensive two weeks!

Once the unit was on the roof I went back inside and started working on school work. I managed to type up the learning goals and scales for the year.

My plan is to focus on the three Common Core standards related to technology/accessing and organizing information/research. I used this book for the scales.



I love this book. You can really see how the expectations change at each grade level. Teaching K-5, this was perfect for me.

I used the sample scales for those three standards to type up a double sided sheet for each grade for each standard.



The front of the page has the learning goal and space for students to write the goal in his or her own words. I also included the Common Core Standards related to the goal.



On the back of the page is the learning goal. I have students track progress here. in the left column I have students write the date to show where they think they are at that time. We do this periodically throughout the unit. Each student has a copy of this double sided page kept in his/her folder.

I did one of these for each grade level (K-5) for each of the three technology standards. I am going to add some clip art, but I’m happy to have this much finished.

I thought I was going to school tomorrow for Edmodocon. Then I checked my e-mail and noticed I had the date wrong. Edmodocon is Wednesday.

I am planning on using the digital citizenship curriculum from Common Sense with my classes this year. There is a session about this planned for Wednesday. I watched the sessions last year in my classroom while working on my classroom. It was a great free resource.

I used Edmodo in my classroom last year for reading logs, spelling packets through Spelling City, and more. If you haven’t explored this yet, I would highly recommend it!

My new case

My IPEVO Wishpool wish came today. I am in love with my new iPad case. Seriously. I love it. I was carrying it around with me for most of the day. One of my friends was teasing me about it. She joked that it even matched my shirt. Expect photos soon.

Fractions

This week was all about fractions! I bought more fraction clip art than I care to admit this week. Bring on the fraction activities!



I’ve just posted this pack. We’ve broken up our fraction unit into two parts. This pack covers the fraction identification piece. Number lines are big in third grade and with common core, so I’ve included that as well.

More fractions!

At the FCTM conference last October I went to every fraction session I could find! One of the activities I saw was fractions on an open number line.

I bought all this great fraction clip art, so I made these fraction outfits to practice on the line.
I’ll be adding this to my store once I create a few worksheets for my class…and to finish the pack.

Shhh! Don’t tell anyone!

I have a secret. 

I’m not a big fan of the Dr. with a birthday this week. It isn’t that I don’t like his books. I just don’t feel the need to spend an excessive amount of time on in them.

I know. You can start throwing stones now!

I vaguely remember being so excited about my first copy of Hop on Pop. Then I remember asking my mom what the whole thing was actually about. At seven I was concerned about a lack of plot.

I was a bit of an odd child that way!

Cold!

The Irishman is still getting over his cold, but this cold has to do with the weather! We are getting the longest, coldest weather of the year this week. I can’t wait! Florida cold is nothing to most of you, but I’ll take it!

Unpacking

About three weeks ago I was asked to go to Orlando for a Common Core institute. After getting my husband to agree to play Mr. Mom while I am away, reservations were made. It wasn’t until I went to submit my sub request that I realized that the Orlando trip was directly after the only two personal days I plan to take this year.

Meaning I would be away for SIX days straight.

Meaning I had to write SIX DAYS worth of sub plans.

Then on the day before we left for our fun little family cruise the school was on lockdown for SIX hours due to an armed robbery on the university campus. My class was on our way back from a field trip at the time so we had turn around and spend the afternoon at the park.

I have the BEST parents in my class this year. I made one phone call and had 5 parents there. They brought the kids pizza and drinks. My darlings declared it was the best day ever and didn’t even seem bothered about that fact that we were at the park until 4pm.

While all ended without incident and we had a great time at the park, it meant I had no time to a) write my sub plans and b) get my hair cut. It pained me to cancel that appointment!

Anyway….

I had a great time on the cruise. I was nervous about cruising with the kids, but it was fantastic! We did my two favorite things: sleep and eat!

As soon as I got back I repacked a bag and headed off to Orlando. Tomorrow is day three of the 4 day institute. So far we’ve had a very disappointing ELA presenter and a pretty good math presenter. We’ll see how the rest of the week goes! We hope to be unpacking some standards – hence the title of the blog.

I miss my family terribly, but I have gotten SO much work done! I posted two more items to my TpT store (Student Self Reflection Cards and a Pirate Map Activity) and have one more in the works.  I have wanted to get that done for weeks!

I am honored to be nominated for a Liebster award by the lovely Jessica at Wild About Firsties, but that will have to be another post. I have to go convince myself to grade papers tonight before I go to bed!
