I wanted to plan something for <a href="https://www.internationaldotday.org/" target="_blank">Dot Day</a>, but I wasn't sure where to begin given my situation at the time. What we came up with is something I think is worth sharing - even if it has taken me almost a year to do so! The theme I used was "The Little Things are the Big Things."<div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgG3syiodT41D9-fhjlSH4N56gY6u9kYiuIGMQMHzZpPuVymADFUHJ7qVtwlDJbXGGFmHQvI05yNyrUr0RXqDbqVRxpeZUqk0uODZWGyJsXnPptZtuE_UVnJKk6L-RXpwKB2s_towAfz803ivorse9JogY4h-J0oh65JWcwgHXMv89k6lOumQsSF-EjTg/s1800/IMG_7998%20(1).JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1800" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgG3syiodT41D9-fhjlSH4N56gY6u9kYiuIGMQMHzZpPuVymADFUHJ7qVtwlDJbXGGFmHQvI05yNyrUr0RXqDbqVRxpeZUqk0uODZWGyJsXnPptZtuE_UVnJKk6L-RXpwKB2s_towAfz803ivorse9JogY4h-J0oh65JWcwgHXMv89k6lOumQsSF-EjTg/w640-h426/IMG_7998%20(1).JPG" width="640" /></a></div><div><div><br /></div><div>First, I partnered with the research team at my school. We are a K-12 school, and they have a truly state of the art facility in the high school building. While many of the elementary classes toured the lab during the year, it was going to be hard to take all of my elementary classes during the first couple of weeks of September. So after talking about types of microscopes with my students, we took a <a href="https://cenariovr.com/app/#/view/962?zfile=live.zip&id=11882" target="_blank">virtual tour of the Owls Imaging Lab</a>. This was a huge hit! With one-to-one devices, I was able to let my students explore the virtual experience independently. They loved that they got to choose what to look at first.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://cenariovr.com/app/#/view/962?zfile=live.zip&id=11882" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" data-original-height="1234" data-original-width="2528" height="195" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdPUwIWSJuETEPOtzDV5thPCxxzevwnTnoODVEs6XDmdvFji4CTiVTecD9aSXXwhWmT65bd-wHalvn4GvrjThz_ZMtlmcMByIC5dQKif6UCVsOyneUJN3vishzp0kmQ9u0mAvmEGgFLJHLNYeMX4_HLda9D6cGI4w2ISFWkUjMZ2QeBmsu6rhD5Oybxg/w400-h195/Screen%20Shot%202022-09-03%20at%202.26.24%20PM.png" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>After viewing the lab, I read <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Do-Not-Lick-This-Book/dp/1250175364" target="_blank"><i>Do Not Lick This Book</i></a> to my classes. This book was popular with students of all ages. We talked a lot about the difference between macro and micro images. I emphasized how things can look quite different when magnified. Most of the images in the book were taken with imaging tools. I introduced the idea of macro and micro photos of the same items.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1lN0ZL7ii_TOShLm65n9tBDFV6vuLrBl7wDkUrjOy51oJ4T6kpyQlTthSZj-FvgjCItjMFyjYN0LgYyUIG85KRgaFbHy6hWHidRuKJ73wPXS1xWW4ImoUivCKtYD83K3Pen_P-BXvO-J3EBj3L6ot98z6v4mXsWIzQcplsJrzCaXCWv6pB6QKJYQ3qw/s225/DoNotLick.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="225" data-original-width="225" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1lN0ZL7ii_TOShLm65n9tBDFV6vuLrBl7wDkUrjOy51oJ4T6kpyQlTthSZj-FvgjCItjMFyjYN0LgYyUIG85KRgaFbHy6hWHidRuKJ73wPXS1xWW4ImoUivCKtYD83K3Pen_P-BXvO-J3EBj3L6ot98z6v4mXsWIzQcplsJrzCaXCWv6pB6QKJYQ3qw/s1600/DoNotLick.jpeg" width="225" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>Then it was time to start the project. I told the students that the art teacher and I had picked a few items from her room. We were wondering what they would look like under a microscope. With Dot Day coming up, that led us to ask the question, "Dot or Not?" </div><div><br /></div><div>Each student chose an art supply and predicted whether they thought the images the imaging lab took would contain a dot. I recorded the names and each hypothesis on <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/17WZJVM_pwqRLuk5kYe5uBoXAah1nbU7UW_lbpTWPReA/copy?usp=sharing" target="_blank">a spreadsheet like this one</a>. I made a big show about how these items were going to be imaged in the actual lab that we had virtually visited. </div><div><br /></div><div>The next week, I shared the<a href="https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1VgL2CQit9TjPsrigtimA_5BzpChRChyT?usp=sharing"> image folder.</a> The research team used the best tools for each item, so not all items were viewed with all tools. There was great excitement. </div><div><br /></div><div>I did this project with K-5, so different grade levels shared their results in different ways. I worked with the art teacher to have each student make a large dot with the words DOT on one side and NOT on the other. We used these to record green screen videos to share whether or not the micro image had a DOT for Dot Day.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiR7WLQ3IxisvBUN6elT3VeIDs5DJMkrPMCea2fSHkmC4M-VZkAl_38WsEa46iX9drFSmSNuNKgqzVB0QCzviXITmVkg8IpA6NEWhGHiqlybddlC-89hyjoHwFIQLP_c8j6iHqS9rIGqluxErnhaNTOLaZD6zLtwjzR5a_KuId6vu2mRWqNgH7UJ2zPkg/s640/440366F4-35B9-41E6-A389-6C1931B90ABF_MP4_AdobeExpress.gif" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="360" data-original-width="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiR7WLQ3IxisvBUN6elT3VeIDs5DJMkrPMCea2fSHkmC4M-VZkAl_38WsEa46iX9drFSmSNuNKgqzVB0QCzviXITmVkg8IpA6NEWhGHiqlybddlC-89hyjoHwFIQLP_c8j6iHqS9rIGqluxErnhaNTOLaZD6zLtwjzR5a_KuId6vu2mRWqNgH7UJ2zPkg/s16000/440366F4-35B9-41E6-A389-6C1931B90ABF_MP4_AdobeExpress.gif" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">(My then-kindergartener)</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLMwuQyoMVfZWWq9_H0osxFTpDVVP_YLxH4s3IYqt9kSLvj-b1ymjr1R43u7j5ncIwvbBlT1-CnM1mDrwiYumIeOfuVKHm0fnowXtPHOU6JQVXYP3siGvbnkON9eCiAaXYbGxbGCiR8snivPKk23axELbg-nXLE1c7bPyP9Yqi0A-k4TK5hKf5VjRR5g/s1920/IMG_8510.PNG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1920" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLMwuQyoMVfZWWq9_H0osxFTpDVVP_YLxH4s3IYqt9kSLvj-b1ymjr1R43u7j5ncIwvbBlT1-CnM1mDrwiYumIeOfuVKHm0fnowXtPHOU6JQVXYP3siGvbnkON9eCiAaXYbGxbGCiR8snivPKk23axELbg-nXLE1c7bPyP9Yqi0A-k4TK5hKf5VjRR5g/w400-h225/IMG_8510.PNG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">(My then-4th grader)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">My younger students used Seesaw to tell about their project. Due to construction, we have a bit of an extended summer, though teachers are back now to set up the new spaces. While the public schools around us started this week, students don't report until Aug. 23. There is still a lot of work to be done, but I am excited to share photos of the new space soon!<div><br /></div><div>This summer was a great one. We started off in DC for the<a href="https://www.exploravision.org/2022/06/06/introducing-the-2022-exploravision-national-winning-projects/" target="_blank"> Exploravision awards</a>. At the end of June, I joined a team from my school at ISTE. July was a lot of family time and a trip to Orlando for the Florida Teacher Lead Network Alumni Event. </div><div><br /></div><div>So, now I am up to my eyeballs in alligators trying to get ready for the new year, but it is SO exciting. I've put together a wish list of items for my room. A certain social media giant flagged my list and wouldn't let me post it there, so I am going to try here.</div><div><br /></div><div><a href="https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/2NDZ6C7AB9RJ1?ref_=wl_share" target="_blank">STEAM Lab Wish List</a></div><div><br /></div><div><a href="https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/SY4POLCV6HRU?ref_=wl_share" target="_blank">STEAM Lab Library Wish List</a></div><div><br /></div><div>Thank you for anyone able to help! I appreciate it!</div><div><br /></div><div>Photos of the new space coning soon!<br /><div>

We are one of <a href="https://www.exploravision.org/winners/" target="_blank">eight nationally recognized teams</a> that will be heading to DC for an awards celebration next month. I am SO proud of <a href="https://nstawebdirector.wixsite.com/website-4" target="_blank">The Replenishanator</a> team and all that they accomplished! </div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="348" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/TtP8ZyjAQ58" width="418" youtube-src-id="TtP8ZyjAQ58"></iframe></div><div><br /></div><div>In other good news, we have 10 days left of school. Due to the pandemic and then to construction on our new building, I've taught from a cart for the last two years. Last year I pushed into classrooms and my cart had an extra monitor connected to the students at home on Zoom at the same time. This year everyone is in person, but I lost my classroom when others were relocated when the portables were removed to make way for the new building.</div><div><br /></div><div>While this year has been just a little less crazy than the last, I think this video is still relevant. Look out for my specials team. We are the unicorns pushing carts at the 1:39 mark.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="352" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/V5K-yIW9X0k" width="423" youtube-src-id="V5K-yIW9X0k"></iframe></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>Speaking of summer, If you happen to be looking for a fun virtual PD opportunity during your time off, I suggest the <a href="https://bit.ly/gss-jenny" target="_blank">Green Screen Summit</a>.<div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href=" https://bit.ly/gss-jenny" target="_blank"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='429' height='357' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dz1G6tKWRwwaEd6LaMIt7Q6walvN7VeZvGCLvW7G3XVJA6cc8nKzqBYPVFp5ybBVuje7tARFBuDujhRWTWOaQ' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></a></div><div><br /></div><div>I attended last year because one of my edtech creative heroes was presenting. I was absolutely delighted when she asked if I would present this year! Whether you are a newbie or a green screen addict, you will love this virtual event! Early bird pricing ends 5/15. The event this year is July 20-23, but the sessions are recorded so you have flexibility in viewing. If you do sign up, please use <a href="https://bit.ly/gss-jenny" target="_blank">my affiliate link</a> so I get credit for it.</div><div><br /></div><div>I hope that the end of the school year goes smoothly for you!</div><div><div>

I really focused a lot on work/life balance. I have always been an ambitious person, but I discovered how much I like going to bed at a reasonable hour instead of working until I can't keep my eyes open. After the first 6 months or so when I took up making sourdough bread, I started going around my neighborhood trying to walk off the extra weight I put on due to my new hobby. I carved out time for myself and things that made me happy.<div><br /></div><div>I found Twitter wasn't good for me at that time. While I usually love finding out the newest edtech ideas, there was too much noise. I had to step away.</div><div><br /></div><div>In the last few weeks, things have started to feel more like "before." I have been staying up later. Events and projects that haven't happened since 2020 (or even 2019) are returning. One one hand it is exciting. On the other hand it has me reassessing my priorities.</div><div><br /></div><div>Next week I am going to NSTA in Houston. I've missed conferences and the ideas I always come home with afterwards. I am also venturing back to Twitter. I have an exciting opportunity this summer and am realizing that it is time to reconnect.</div><div><br /></div><div>I call myself an occasional blogger, but I guess this break was a little more than that. I think I'm ready to dip my toe back in the water and see where it takes me.<br />

I’m writing this on the plane home from St. Louis, and finally posting it weeks later. I have to admit that I was not excited about the fact that NSTA was in the Show-Me-State. This is my third NSTA conference, and it was one of the best organized conferences that I have attended. Don't get me started on the food! We ate at <b><u>so</u></b> many fantastic places in downtown St. Louis. Yummy!

<b style="font-weight: normal;"><br /></b>
<b style="font-weight: normal;"><br /></b>
<br />
The conference kicked off with a keynote from retired astronaut Scott Kelly. His message was inspirational and informative. “I was trained not to focus on the things you can control, not the things you can’t.”

<b style="font-weight: normal;"><br /></b>
<br />
The results of the “twin study” were released just the next day. It was pretty neat to have heard his story and then to see him on the morning news the next day.
<b style="font-weight: normal;"><br /></b>
<br />
<br />
On Thursday I also had a Technology Advisory Board meeting. I am excited to get to work with the team this year.

<b style="font-weight: normal;"><br /></b>
<br />
The plane ride home is always my favorite time to reflect on what I’ve learned and to make plans for how to implement changes in my classroom. I attended two sessions in particular that made me think.
<b style="font-weight: normal;"><br /></b>
<br />
I actually attended a session that I had seen last year. I love the idea of holding a School Maker Faire. The team from South Orangetown Central School District was back again this year to explain how they hold a <a href="http://blogs.socsd.org/makerfaire/" target="_blank">district-wide Maker Faire</a>. With all the maker-resources we have on our campus, I think it would be amazing to showcase the work we are doing to the entire school community. The presenters talked about how many of the projects are done in school and saved, but others are done by students at home and brought in.
<br />
<div dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-q8_DPwxmPbQ/XLPpKIphs2I/AAAAAAAAVRw/4-JOgqGCLRgHiQ_VWnIZGycXPPoJ9rM7wCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/JPEG%2Bimage-D3313C5A9867-3.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-q8_DPwxmPbQ/XLPpKIphs2I/AAAAAAAAVRw/4-JOgqGCLRgHiQ_VWnIZGycXPPoJ9rM7wCK4BGAYYCw/s400/JPEG%2Bimage-D3313C5A9867-3.jpeg" width="300" /></a></div>
<b style="font-weight: normal;"><br /></b>
<br />
I also really like the “<a href="https://sites.google.com/view/sciencefairofoptimization/home?authuser=0" target="_blank">Science Fair of Optimization</a>.” The 4-6 grade team from Captain Samuel Douglass Academy told of their science fair woes and how they were able to make things easier for the teacher, but still meaningful for the students. The developed group projects based on a problem that requires students to apply the engineering design process. Students are presented with a scenario based on a problem facing a cleverly named fake company. As a group they must decide what variables to test to solve the problem. Each student then completes a “science fair project” where they test the variable using the controls set by the group. At the end, the students come together to create a prototype using the information they learned from the individual projects.
<b style="font-weight: normal;"><br /></b>
<br />
<br />
Our school has not had an elementary science fair in a while and we are trying to move in that direction. Once of the problems is helping student to understand variables. I love that this project focuses on identifying variables and creating a way to test a single variable. I look forward to talking with our upper elementary teachers about the idea.
<br />
<div dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">
<br /></div>
Our <a href="http://bit.ly/nsta19" target="_blank"><i>Bringing Student Creativity to Life in the Elementary Science Classroom</i> </a>workshop presentation was one of the best that Cara and I have done. Just a few weeks ago we were panicked because HP Reveal Studio is in transition and we cannot create augmented reality projects using that website. At FETC, we learned about <a href="http://thyng.com/" target="_blank">Thyng</a>. We sent them a message and the responded almost right away. They have been great to work with and even stayed in the office late on a Friday to be “on-hand” during our workshop. The projects look great and we think they are going to be a great tool for our First Grade Garden next month.

<b style="font-weight: normal;"><br /></b>
<br />
The workshop was a lot of fun. We set up the green screen and demo-ed how simple it is to use the <a href="http://www.doink.com/" target="_blank">Green Screen app by DoInk</a>. We were the last session of the day, but we had a nice crowd and got some great feedback.
<b style="font-weight: normal;"><br /></b>
<br />
<br />
Saturday morning Suzette joined us to add her middle school perspective to <i>T<a href="http://bit.ly/nsta19" target="_blank">ransforming Your Science Classroom with Technology</a></i>. It was an 8am session on a Saturday morning in a very large room.

<b style="font-weight: normal;"><br /></b>
<b style="font-weight: normal;"><br /></b>
<br />
We had a nice crowd and got some great feedback. After the session, a STEM Coordinator stopped us to ask questions. She said that her district had a lot of the tools and resources that we talked about, but that the teachers were not using them in a way that connects to the standards. One of the greatest compliments to me was the fact that beyond all the tools we told about, it was the way we used the tools that stood out to her.

We knew it was going to be cold and rainy, but the temperature dipped and we actually saw some snowflakes and winter mix. For three teachers from Florida, that’s a big deal!

I supposed that blogging about a conference months later just reinforces that point!<br />
<br />
This year our school sent a team of teachers to FETC. Towards the end of the trip, the elementary team was sitting at dinner and I brought out a notepad and pens. We each sketchnoted something that we learned about that we wanted to try in our classrooms.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HQFz_CgI-h4/XLN3yVvgd0I/AAAAAAAAVP8/otEdVphT3dEehMdHP49_dhQCtH4YwVbaACK4BGAYYCw/s1600/JPEG%2Bimage-27F85DF5B08C-5.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HQFz_CgI-h4/XLN3yVvgd0I/AAAAAAAAVP8/otEdVphT3dEehMdHP49_dhQCtH4YwVbaACK4BGAYYCw/s640/JPEG%2Bimage-27F85DF5B08C-5.jpeg" width="422" /></a></div>
<br />
Many of the ideas overlapped. (<a href="http://www.teachbeyondbuzzwords.com/" target="_blank">Cara</a> was mad that I wrote down the Alexa Skill Blueprints before she could do so.) What was fantastic was the fact that no one batted an eye when I suggested the sketchnote. We had meaningful conversations about <a href="https://flipgrid.com/" target="_blank">Flipgrid</a>, <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/onenote/9wzdncrfhvjl#activetab=pivot:overviewtab" target="_blank">OneNote</a>, <a href="https://www.kinful.org/" target="_blank">Kinful</a>, <a href="https://www.loom.com/" target="_blank">Loom</a>, I<a href="https://educationblog.microsoft.com/en-us/tag/immersive-reader/" target="_blank">mmersive Reader,</a> <a href="http://thyng.com/" target="_blank">thyng</a>, <a href="https://mergevr.com/cube" target="_blank">Merge Cube</a>, and <a href="https://blueprints.amazon.com/" target="_blank">Alexa Skill Blueprints.</a> We brainstormed ideas for using these tools in the classroom. It was one of my favorite moments of the conference.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
I also got to meet Paul Reynolds. We recently purchased <a href="https://www.fablevisionlearning.com/fabmakerstudio" target="_blank">Fab@School</a> from Fablevision Learning for the STEAM Lab, after years of trying to find funds for the purchase. I love the STEAM focus of Fablevision Learning and the STEAM books that Paul Reynolds has written.</div>

<br />
<br />
I am a huge fan, so it was wonderful to have some books autographed. I also talked with Peggy Healy Stearns, who created Fab@School, about ideas for using the program.<br />

<br />
This conference was not all fun and games. Cara and I presented a two hour workshop called <a href="http://bit.ly/FETCGSAR" target="_blank">Bringing Learning to Life with Green Screen & Augmented Reality</a>. It went well, even though we got an email from HP Reveal the FRIDAY AFTERNOON before we left letting us know that HP Reveal Studio will soon stop working. That is not news you want to hear before you present a 2-hour workshop on how to use green screen (<a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/green-screen-by-do-ink/id730091131?mt=8" target="_blank">DoInk</a>) and AR using <a href="https://www.hpreveal.com/" target="_blank">HP Reveal</a>. (I'll blog soon on our recent replacement)<br />

<br />
<br />
I also presented a lecture session on <a href="http://bit.ly/fetcsteam19" target="_blank">STEAM in Action</a>. I had only 30 minutes between sessions, so one of the ladies in my session made this meme for me.<br />

We also got to cheer on <a href="https://twitter.com/mrsnicolerubin?lang=en" target="_blank">Nicole</a>.<br />

It was a wonderful few days of learning in Orlando. Many of the ideas we learned about have already been applied in our classrooms. Thyng has been the biggest find for me so far, but that will be a blog post of its own. I hope to make it to #FETC20 in Miami!<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-u5VtXCr18xw/Wzw7DditItI/AAAAAAAASao/qlVwn6LxJ5gfEj_x-5bYs20qY7aVHbnGgCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_6679.HEIC" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="700" data-original-width="1600" height="280" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-u5VtXCr18xw/Wzw7DditItI/AAAAAAAASao/qlVwn6LxJ5gfEj_x-5bYs20qY7aVHbnGgCKgBGAs/s640/IMG_6679.HEIC" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
It was a very busy few days, but it is still one of my favorites! Chicago was fun. It wasn't my favorite conference set up, but the non-conference food/fun was top notch.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iXhRcXVuA7E/Wzw7hN6lTKI/AAAAAAAASa8/VeIgVSXNTYkBTD7ndGWU5hG3UVavhYW-QCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_6664.HEIC" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1203" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iXhRcXVuA7E/Wzw7hN6lTKI/AAAAAAAASa8/VeIgVSXNTYkBTD7ndGWU5hG3UVavhYW-QCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_6664.HEIC" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
We started with the pre-conference <a href="https://web.seesaw.me/connect/" target="_blank">Seesaw Connect</a> event. The opening Ignite Sessions were great and we made some great connections. Cara and I added several ideas from the opening session to our annual plane ride home list of ideas. (More on that later!)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yZ9MlgnstN0/Wzw8ecn0OyI/AAAAAAAASbM/zaMFzbs--rkCt6zc-QHTf0jx2526z_jUgCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_2173.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yZ9MlgnstN0/Wzw8ecn0OyI/AAAAAAAASbM/zaMFzbs--rkCt6zc-QHTf0jx2526z_jUgCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_2173.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
If I present a session, my school will let me attend the conference. Knowing the <a href="https://conference.iste.org/2018/presenters/submit_proposal.php" target="_blank">ISTE conference acceptance rates</a> I decided to submit multiple proposals. As luck would have it, all my proposals were accepted. It made for a hectic few days!<br />

I finished off Monday afternoon at the <a href="https://www.tynker.com/?t=reset" target="_blank">Tynker</a> booth and then at the Google Teacher Lounge.<br />

Here is the <a href="https://www.blogger.com/Tynker%20and%20Google%20Classroom:%20%20A%20Perfect%20Match!" target="_blank">Tynker and Google Classroom: A Perfect Match!</a> presentation I did with <a href="https://twitter.com/drezac?lang=en" target="_blank">Daniel Rezac</a>. Google had someone sketchnote each of the session in the Google Teacher Lounge. Post conference Google for Edu has been sharing a few of the sketchnotes on Facebook and Twitter each day. I cannot wait to see the sketch from my session!<br />

<br />
<a href="https://twitter.com/deborah_schram" target="_blank">Debbie</a> and I presented <a href="http://bit.ly/ISTE18SPEC" target="_blank">Special Project Enrichment Courses: Giving Elementary Students a Choice in Learning</a> on Tuesday. The resources are available <a href="http://bit.ly/ISTE18SPEC" target="_blank">here</a>. After that poster I ran into <a href="https://lesliefisher.com/" target="_blank">Leslie Fisher</a> in the bathroom. I overheard her talking about the next session she was presenting. I was disappointed that I didn't make it to any of her sessions this year due to my schedule, but I sent Debbie. Wouldn't you know it, she shared a good music resource for the session I recommended to our music teacher. 🎶<br />
<br />

<br />
I had only 30 minutes between poster sessions. I was exhausted after 4+ hours on my feet, but I met some wonderful people. <a href="http://bit.ly/isteSTEAM18" target="_blank">STEAM in Action</a> is always one of my favorites to present.<br />

<br />
I have to say one of my highlights was getting to see <a href="https://twitter.com/mrsnicolerubin" target="_blank">Nicole Rubin</a> present during the Young Educators Ignite Session. This is just the first few seconds of her Ignite. I was in charge of recording and got a notification on my iPad that covered the time stamp at the top. I panicked and thought it was not recording when in fact it was recording. Oops! So for now the video is in two parts. Sorry Nicole!<br />
<br />
I spent most of my time presenting and did not make it to many sessions, but I still have a list of takeaways. Last year Cara and I planned all the LEGO SPEC courses that we then presented this year. Here are our second annual ISTE reflections.<br />

We also wrote out two pages of plans for our next big project ideas, but those aren't ready to share yet. Hopefully those will be blog posts of their own in the next year.<br />
<br />
Another of my favorite parts of ISTE is meeting people and making connections. This year I got to meet some of my favorites IRL.<br />
<br />
I've become a big fan of the <a href="https://sites.google.com/view/shukesandgiff/home" target="_blank">#ShukesandGiff podcast</a>. I was the one that took this picture for them at <a href="https://drive.google.com/drive/u/0/folders/1Tg0L1-SFRxe5-2QMzcHuZHBdfqj-M8NJ" target="_blank">their poster</a>. I may have geeked out about about meeting them. I'm still disappointed I missed their Ignite sessions, but I think the idea behind their <a href="https://drive.google.com/drive/u/0/folders/1Tg0L1-SFRxe5-2QMzcHuZHBdfqj-M8NJ" target="_blank">poster session</a> may be a good fit for my school. We've been talking about documenting/sharing what we do using Google sites and their district has done a great job of doing just that.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SKimMMgapkg/WzxErRZREYI/AAAAAAAAScE/w6yjvSXck84ALbuRSJRTnq0IWqwPh4idACLcBGAs/s1600/DgtvMubW0AEfbyj.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="768" data-original-width="1024" height="240" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SKimMMgapkg/WzxErRZREYI/AAAAAAAAScE/w6yjvSXck84ALbuRSJRTnq0IWqwPh4idACLcBGAs/s320/DgtvMubW0AEfbyj.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div>
I've long admired the projects that <a href="https://drydenart.weebly.com/fugleblog" target="_blank">Tricia Fuglestad</a> has shared on <a href="https://twitter.com/fuglefun" target="_blank">Twitter</a>. I was thrilled when I got to talk to her at our <a href="http://www.teachbeyondbuzzwords.com/2018/06/thank-you-iste.html" target="_blank">AR + Green Screen</a> poster. She even posted about one of my projects in her <a href="https://drydenart.weebly.com/fugleblog/ten-takeaways-from-iste18" target="_blank">Ten Takeaways from #ISTE18</a> blog post. I have already tried out her idea for<a href="https://drydenart.weebly.com/fugleblog/keynote-for-ipad-drawing-feature" target="_blank"> drawing with Keynote for iPad</a>. I also have plans this summer to try out the DoInk Animation app. My 8-year-old has seen me playing with both of these tools and is begging to have a turn.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It was a busy few days, but I loved it. I've made new connections and am already making plans for next year!</div>

I just finished putting the final touches on the poster I am presenting with <a href="http://www.teachbeyondbuzzwords.com/" target="_blank">Cara</a> tomorrow. No matter how early we start we always seem to find ourselves making last minute additions and tweaks the night before. I love working with her.<br />
<br />
I actually have FIVE presentations scheduled in the next two days. This is what happens when you put in extra proposals to be sure that you will be selected to attend the conference. I'm excited to get to share my ideas with like minded educators.<br />
<br />

<br />
If you are at ISTE, be sure to stop by and say hi! If not, I will be posting links to resources as soon as the conference is over and I can catch my breath!<br />

"Our First Grade Gardens" has become one of my very favorite projects in the STEAM Lab. This week was our annual gallery opening and I realized that I never properly shared the project here.<br />
<br />
My friend <a href="https://twitter.com/carapavek" target="_blank">Cara</a> started this project in her first grade classroom. It started as a mother's day project. When Cara got a grant to expand the project to the other first grade classes, I got involved. While it started with painting the canvases in the STEAM Lab, I came back with a "what if" that would have sent most people running, and Cara worked with me to sort out the details.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://twitter.com/carapavek" target="_blank">Cara </a>and I will be sharing a poster session called <a href="https://conference.iste.org/2018/program/search/detail_session.php?id=110897123" target="_blank">AR + Green Screen = App Smashing Success</a> at #ISTE18 but here is an overview of this particular project. (Photo credit to Cara for the awesome posters!)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XT-fkLPDMN0/WwsQWpgHSsI/AAAAAAAARQI/RMFoqhJiGF4B4TOxGb8CXkHAgfabGTPRgCLcBGAs/s1600/Process%2BSlides%2Bfor%2BBlog%2B%25281%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="336" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XT-fkLPDMN0/WwsQWpgHSsI/AAAAAAAARQI/RMFoqhJiGF4B4TOxGb8CXkHAgfabGTPRgCLcBGAs/s320/Process%2BSlides%2Bfor%2BBlog%2B%25281%2529.jpg" width="224" /></a></div>
<br />
Each first grade class read the book "My Garden" by <a href="https://kevinhenkes.com/" target="_blank">Kevin Henkes</a> as part of their author study project.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UO_HRY_Piqs/WwsQWpROUMI/AAAAAAAARQE/zJugnSUY39YvXl3XsDdT12zV3qSNzW_dQCLcBGAs/s1600/Process%2BSlides%2Bfor%2BBlog%2B%25282%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="336" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UO_HRY_Piqs/WwsQWpROUMI/AAAAAAAARQE/zJugnSUY39YvXl3XsDdT12zV3qSNzW_dQCLcBGAs/s320/Process%2BSlides%2Bfor%2BBlog%2B%25282%2529.jpg" width="224" /></a></div>
<br />
In the classroom the students designed their own themed garden and then paint their imaginary gardens on canvas. The awesome first grade team delivered the sketches to me and my part of the project began.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8hSlh9Lnc-Y/WwsQWvm3piI/AAAAAAAARQA/UeNwJHsefkInftE_2m-Q5Aew0-q2lGrRwCLcBGAs/s1600/Process%2BSlides%2Bfor%2BBlog%2B%25283%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="336" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8hSlh9Lnc-Y/WwsQWvm3piI/AAAAAAAARQA/UeNwJHsefkInftE_2m-Q5Aew0-q2lGrRwCLcBGAs/s320/Process%2BSlides%2Bfor%2BBlog%2B%25283%2529.jpg" width="224" /></a></div>
<br />
In the STEAM Lab each student used his or her sketch to paint the design on a canvas using tempera paint. Students used paint pens and glitter glue to add the details.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2dqKN0jOYwk/WwsQW6EiSNI/AAAAAAAARQM/VO2qPhF_algb5UM1qoikNQS-b_qwcxtyACLcBGAs/s1600/Process%2BSlides%2Bfor%2BBlog%2B%25284%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="336" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2dqKN0jOYwk/WwsQW6EiSNI/AAAAAAAARQM/VO2qPhF_algb5UM1qoikNQS-b_qwcxtyACLcBGAs/s320/Process%2BSlides%2Bfor%2BBlog%2B%25284%2529.jpg" width="224" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Using Google Slides, students typed up their gallery descriptions. These were printed and posted in the gallery next to each painting.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6yYn6OjoMr8/WwsQXS-zHmI/AAAAAAAARQQ/lqypDMY342YehwG8y80-as6aAzsgJxdQQCLcBGAs/s1600/Process%2BSlides%2Bfor%2BBlog%2B%25285%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="336" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6yYn6OjoMr8/WwsQXS-zHmI/AAAAAAAARQQ/lqypDMY342YehwG8y80-as6aAzsgJxdQQCLcBGAs/s320/Process%2BSlides%2Bfor%2BBlog%2B%25285%2529.jpg" width="224" /></a></div>
<br />
I used the PhotoScan app from Google to take a good picture of each canvas. Using the Green Screen app by <a href="http://www.doink.com/" target="_blank">DoInk</a>, we recorded a green screen video using the picture of the canvas as the background. Our green screen is a green bed sheet that we hang using clothespins. We drape a second green sheet over chairs to give the illusion that students are sitting on an object in the painting.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DCV6nICfEUE/WwsQXtr41jI/AAAAAAAARQU/bE9DhPdAjAEoZ6Bfl2hDgPCD5f_RCzMswCLcBGAs/s1600/Process%2BSlides%2Bfor%2BBlog%2B%25286%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="336" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DCV6nICfEUE/WwsQXtr41jI/AAAAAAAARQU/bE9DhPdAjAEoZ6Bfl2hDgPCD5f_RCzMswCLcBGAs/s320/Process%2BSlides%2Bfor%2BBlog%2B%25286%2529.jpg" width="224" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Using <a href="https://studio.hpreveal.com/landing" target="_blank">HP Reveal Studio</a>, I set the photo as the target and the green screen as the aura. The auras are saved to a campaign that is shared with the parents.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The end result is something like this:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/S35S9jOb2kY/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/S35S9jOb2kY?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<br />
<br />
This year we were able to work with <a href="http://www.fau.edu/artsandletters/galleries/" target="_blank">FAU's University Galleries</a> to display the student work at the Ritter Gallery. It was AMAZING!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ULgW0h81H5s/WwsceDEKucI/AAAAAAAARQs/z2L5ycCUVXEcGY07pqw5UUGOysaN15U7ACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_1877.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="355" data-original-width="1600" height="140" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ULgW0h81H5s/WwsceDEKucI/AAAAAAAARQs/z2L5ycCUVXEcGY07pqw5UUGOysaN15U7ACLcBGAs/s640/IMG_1877.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
We had a family help us with the set up. Both parents are artists and had the skills and equipment that we lacked. They met us at the gallery last weekend to hang all 54 canvases.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4sOAkHvA8Yc/WwsjH3Jf_mI/AAAAAAAARQ4/vsEt_u1nj-Y6wULyUcD0Z7CaXiEa9piswCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_5883.HEIC" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4sOAkHvA8Yc/WwsjH3Jf_mI/AAAAAAAARQ4/vsEt_u1nj-Y6wULyUcD0Z7CaXiEa9piswCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_5883.HEIC" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Tuesday night was the big night. Our student artists got dressed up and came with their families to view the art in the gallery. It was the third year we have done this, and each year is better than the last. The venue was spectacular. We have already reserved a date for next year.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/8WqgbbVpKzM/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/8WqgbbVpKzM?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<br />
It was a lot of work, but it was a lovely way to celebrate our students!<br />

I am at FETC getting ready for my first of two poster sessions. I have plans to update my blog with all my conference presentations, but it is going to take a little time to get that done.<br />
<br />
So...here is the presentation I will share later today.<br />

There were so many wonderful things happening in the STEAM Lab this week!<br />
<br />
Full disclosure, I also saw this week that my blog bio said I had two children. My youngest will be two in the next couple of week, so I decided it was time to pay the neglected blog some attention! Either way, this week was blog-worthy!<br />
<br />
Monday started with the eclipse. The school purchased glasses for all our students. The STEM coordinator also made these signs.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gAPCCHJszdQ/WaI2umoeQFI/AAAAAAAAMLI/vNg1Yfa9ZCAG8YQJFutmkwEwsV7FQ1TrQCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_3374.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gAPCCHJszdQ/WaI2umoeQFI/AAAAAAAAMLI/vNg1Yfa9ZCAG8YQJFutmkwEwsV7FQ1TrQCLcBGAs/s400/IMG_3374.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Once school was out for the day I was able to take my kindergartener and my second grader out to view the eclipse with me. It was pretty special!<br />
<br />
I decided to bring back <a href="https://suntansandlessonplans.blogspot.com/2014/09/index-card-self-portrait-collaborative.html" target="_blank">this project</a> again this year. Instead of just self portraits like the onse in the picture below, I asked students to draw themselves as scientists. I started by asking what a scientist looks like. I typically got the answer I expected - a man in a white coat and googles. From there I showed the search results on PBS LeanringMedia for "Scientist Profile" and picked few students to select a scientist to learn more about. Interestingly enough, very few of their drawing ended up wearing white lab coats! I have parent volunteers putting the project together next week. I'm excited to see how it comes out!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OLBfEasW5dM/VBELM514e5I/AAAAAAAAB1w/FadpreItfG4hVVtqMNN2YuONuK04wUQQwCPcBGAYYCw/s1600/muralbigred.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="566" data-original-width="1043" height="173" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OLBfEasW5dM/VBELM514e5I/AAAAAAAAB1w/FadpreItfG4hVVtqMNN2YuONuK04wUQQwCPcBGAYYCw/s320/muralbigred.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I always try to start the year with digital citizenship. A could of years ago I purchased the Nearpod version of the Common Sense Media curriculum. I love that I don't have to copy any pages before class starts. It is the perfect way to start the year in the STEAM Lab.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QFxIEPFSLZw/WaI3UEO6iQI/AAAAAAAAMLU/kgfp-23dKXQYT49zCoMLP7dS_uT3hAE6gCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_3379.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QFxIEPFSLZw/WaI3UEO6iQI/AAAAAAAAMLU/kgfp-23dKXQYT49zCoMLP7dS_uT3hAE6gCLcBGAs/s400/IMG_3379.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This year the elementary specialists got together and decided to try something new. I still see all elementary classes on a rotating basis, but we added a fourth day to the rotation. Instead of traveling to specials with the whole class, on the fourth day students go to Special Project Enrichment Classes (SPEC). Each quarter students have a different SPEC Class. We even had a team of teachers that have given up their planning once every four days in exchange for a stipend.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Jg6H12CC5gI/WaI42-HPnhI/AAAAAAAAMLg/BCgUTYNBiloy8dq9zHzv7WHjQtoLd9zFACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_3385.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Jg6H12CC5gI/WaI42-HPnhI/AAAAAAAAMLg/BCgUTYNBiloy8dq9zHzv7WHjQtoLd9zFACLcBGAs/s400/IMG_3385.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
This quarter my SPEC class is all about LEGOs. My fourth and fifth graders get to travel into the high school STEM Lab. It has been a lot of work (and will be another post), but it has been worth it so far.<br />
<br />
It was a full week, but it was the kind of week you look back at and feel good about. I've spent the weekend trying to distract myself from watching storm coverage and worrying about my mom and sister. I grew up in the Houston area and am praying for all those that are trying to deal with the effects of Harvey. Hang in there my Texas friends!<br />
<br />
Have a great week!<br />
<br />

Today I am presenting a 15 minute mini session at the Tynker Booth. They asked the Tynker Blue Ribbon Educators to sign up to do this so I figured I could talk about using <span style="font-size: small;"><span style="background-color: transparent; font-family: Roboto; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">"Using Tynker and PBS LearningMedia to go Beyond Hour of Code."</span></span></div>

I have it in my drafts waiting for another time. This week however, I'm at #NSTA17 in LA. There is nothing like presenting at a conference to make me realize how neglected my poor little blog has become. Something about teaching full time and having three kids makes that happen.<br />
<br />
Yesterday I had the privilege to share <a href="https://www.dropbox.com/s/5bitu874rh95til/STEAMinActionNSTA17.pdf?dl=0" target="_blank">STEAM in Action</a> at the National Science Teachers Association Conference. It was a 30 minute session and went SO fast. I could have easily talked for an hour. I was pleased with how it went and I made some great contacts.<br />
<br />
Now I get to enjoy the rest of the conference! So far I've heard Bill Nye and Andy Weir speak. How cool is that? <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vWLckn9o3DM/U3Lei6p5lpI/AAAAAAAABuA/O7xmrpFuiGs/s1600/Signature.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vWLckn9o3DM/U3Lei6p5lpI/AAAAAAAABuA/O7xmrpFuiGs/s1600/Signature.png" /></a></div>

I've been busy with these darlings.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-s8_LWgAcbp4/V0JnSHWIaoI/AAAAAAAADyM/vwrzl8GFXXEcSEhIper7_e0ieWukWUc-gCK4B/s1600/CB8C3159-CF31-4CFD-81D2-B58B6CABB6B0.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-s8_LWgAcbp4/V0JnSHWIaoI/AAAAAAAADyM/vwrzl8GFXXEcSEhIper7_e0ieWukWUc-gCK4B/s320/CB8C3159-CF31-4CFD-81D2-B58B6CABB6B0.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I went back to work just before winter break. Working full time with three kids has been an adjustment, but it is going well. The baby is already 8 and a half months. My oldest finishes kindergarten in just a couple of weeks. Time flies!<br />
<br />
I have some posts planned for this summer, but I wanted to share this video before then. I worked with the first grade team on an amazing project the last couple of months. This was the promotional video we put together before the big culminating activity.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I plan to share more of the behind the scenes once the end-of-school craziness dies down, but I couldn't wait to share the preview!<br />
<br />

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EBThOXhqn_4/VYTFsg2Xn6I/AAAAAAAACBU/-ZZGeGr38fM/s1600/Slide01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EBThOXhqn_4/VYTFsg2Xn6I/AAAAAAAACBU/-ZZGeGr38fM/s640/Slide01.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Last summer I applied for and won a License for Learning Grant. The STEAM Lab was a fine art classroom before, so it
still has a kiln. Last year I did projects with my kindergarten and fifth
grade classes. My goal for the year was to be sure that all my
classes got to participate in a ceramics project. Thanks to the grant funds each of my 18 classes got to do a ceramics project related to math/science concepts taught in the regular classroom.<br />
<br />
Here is an overview of the projects that we did:<br />
<br />
<b>Kindergarten:</b> Ladybugs (insects)<br />
<b>First Grade:</b> Shape bowls (geometry)<br />
<b>Second Grade:</b> Footprint Necklaces (measurement)<br />
<b>Third Grade:</b> Bells (sound energy)<br />
<b>Fourth Grade:</b> Owls (heat energy)<br />
<b>Fifth Grade: </b>MC Escher hot plates (area)<br />
<br />
I consulted with an art teacher I worked with at summer camp who talked me through the ordering process. Each student started with clay and formed their project. We waited for the pieces to dry and did a bisque fire.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LM3q0PTOedw/VYTK4hDuoVI/AAAAAAAACBk/C4N9l8GluWM/s1600/Slide10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LM3q0PTOedw/VYTK4hDuoVI/AAAAAAAACBk/C4N9l8GluWM/s400/Slide10.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This was the first time I attempted using glaze. I was nervous, but it went well.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-m52Ek37kZKs/VYTLur9IE4I/AAAAAAAACBs/JdSiOlBq_2M/s1600/Slide02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-m52Ek37kZKs/VYTLur9IE4I/AAAAAAAACBs/JdSiOlBq_2M/s400/Slide02.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I managed to keep everything organized. This cart was my organizational crutch. I sorted the projects by class/grade. That being said, we *might* have finished the fourth and fifth grade projects on the last full day of school, but it all got done! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-t7JXtuHFrtA/VYTL0zFzJPI/AAAAAAAACB0/QwsEcCzmzYs/s1600/Slide09.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-t7JXtuHFrtA/VYTL0zFzJPI/AAAAAAAACB0/QwsEcCzmzYs/s640/Slide09.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Grades 1-5 took pictures and posted about their individual projects using Padlet. This was a great way for me to remind students to focus on the classroom math/science content.<br />
<br />
<iframe src='//padlet.com/embed/9rd3bpou0qmz' frameborder='0' width='100%' height='480px' style='padding:0;margin:0;border:none'></iframe><div style='border-top:2px solid #a7d23a;padding:8px;margin:0;font-size:12px;text-align:right'><a href='http://padlet.com' style='color:#41555f;text-decoration:none'>Created with Padlet<img valign='middle' style='margin:0 0 0 10px;padding:0;border:none;width:16px;height:16px' src='http://padlet.com/favicon.ico'></a></div>
<br />
I plan to post about each of the projects over the next week or so. This was one of my very favorite projects. I'm already working on finding funding to continue next year.<br />
<br />
<br />

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Hum2LpTqfkI/VYIb5UVRILI/AAAAAAAACAI/L5fKonZhf7c/s1600/STEAMapps.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="419" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Hum2LpTqfkI/VYIb5UVRILI/AAAAAAAACAI/L5fKonZhf7c/s640/STEAMapps.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After two years of requests, this spring I got a class set of iPad minis thanks to a school wide technology grant. Knowing they were on the way, I spent a little over a month going through the apps I wanted to include. I organized them in a Google Doc for our IT specialist.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I started with the STEAM subjects: Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. I added folders for Augmented Reality, Creation Apps, Coding, Photography, and Video. The list is available <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1HFTbn5igL13nit3nIF7jdlufEjweit7eycuYWWBl_Ds/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank">here</a>. I plan to update the spreadsheet later this summer. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5297eS37NOw/VYNpq18ZKXI/AAAAAAAACAs/JPk-AAQ5Bk4/s1600/sshot1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5297eS37NOw/VYNpq18ZKXI/AAAAAAAACAs/JPk-AAQ5Bk4/s400/sshot1.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I moved the Utilities (including Settings), and other standard apps that you can't move to the second page. There is a link to my Portaportal on the second page as well. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Y9xo5567XnI/VYNpqi2BGyI/AAAAAAAACAo/exZKznNGwLw/s1600/sshot2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Y9xo5567XnI/VYNpqi2BGyI/AAAAAAAACAo/exZKznNGwLw/s400/sshot2.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We spend most of our time App Smashing using the Creation Apps folder. The pottery app is the student choice. While I still feel like we have just started to scratch the surface, I'm loving these new resources.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have a few minor tweaks planned this summer. There are a few apps I don't think we need that are taking up valuable space. I want to add KonaKona and Popplet. Is there anything else that you think I'm missing?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The other big purchase was a class set of wireless Bluetooth headphones. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fSzc-cnkGKE/VYIf-ZIxw7I/AAAAAAAACAU/ArQpAT7fDg4/s1600/lilgadgets.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="281" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fSzc-cnkGKE/VYIf-ZIxw7I/AAAAAAAACAU/ArQpAT7fDg4/s400/lilgadgets.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
I tried headphones with the iMacs when I first started in the STEAM Lab. The first week I had two computers pulled down by well intentioned kindergarteners that forgot they were still wearing the headphones. I quickly removed the headphones and muted the volume. For about a year I searched for wireless headphones that could work in the lab setting. One of our first grade teachers recommended <a href="http://www.lil-gadgets.com/" target="_blank">Lil Gadgets</a>. I've had a class set of the Untangled Pro headphones for three months now. So far I'm impressed. They come in several colors - white was not my choice! They are a small company and have a year warranty. They are worth checking out. <br />
<br />
I have been really happy with these new additions to the STEAM Lab.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I've taught drama at the enrichment camp at my school for about 7 years now. I've always done half days, but this summer I was able to pick up mornings teaching STEAM as well. It is laid back and fun, but working 8-5 each day at 6 months pregnant is hard. The extra money will allow me to extend my maternity leave in the fall though, so it is more than worth it!<br />
<br />
My oldest starts kindergarten in the fall. She is at camp with me this summer and loving every minute of it! I actually stayed home today because her younger brother was sick. I finally had time to look at the presenter details for ISTE. I had no idea the poster area would be so large! I've done <a href="https://www.isteconference.org/2015/program/search_presenter_detail.php?id=94198705" target="_blank">both these presentations </a>at other conferences, but now that school is out I need work on updating and final touches. I'm really looking forward to the conference!<br />
<br />
I also have wrap up posts planned for this week. I have neglected my blog in all the craziness of this school year, but there were several projects that I really want to share. <br />
<br />
I hope your summer is going well!<br />

It is the first time this since school let out that I've pulled out my laptop and done anything at all work related. Even then, it is mostly fun and not "work." I have stopped by my classroom a few times, but only to feed the fish and water our seedlings. Newspaper pots, anyone?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-viS7esXgdio/VKIW1-zIx5I/AAAAAAAAB9o/qgoJyOMWRko/s1600/seedlings.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-viS7esXgdio/VKIW1-zIx5I/AAAAAAAAB9o/qgoJyOMWRko/s1600/seedlings.png" height="320" width="249" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
My husband and I splurged a few days before Christmas. We hired "The Maids" to come in and deep clean the house. It had to be one of my very best ideas ever. After that, I declared this to be the Christmas of no mess and no stress. Amazingly enough, it actually worked. I'm considering making 2015 the year of no stress and no mess. We'll see how it goes!<br />
<br />
If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook, you saw my big news.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2n3r6PX6LJ4/VKIYpOJoDfI/AAAAAAAAB90/9waWMJ11esc/s1600/iste2015badge.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2n3r6PX6LJ4/VKIYpOJoDfI/AAAAAAAAB90/9waWMJ11esc/s1600/iste2015badge.png" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm still in shock! I submitted two proposals for <a href="https://isteconference.org/2015/" target="_blank">ISTE 2015</a>. My goal was to try for a poster session so that I could just attend the conference. My husband said that I was selling myself short. To humor him, I submitted a modified version of the session I did at the NCTM regional conference. On the day that resulted were announced, I had my Tweetdeck open and waiting for word that the notifications had been sent out. I was so sure that I was going to get a rejections that I didn't add to the "still waiting to hear" posts. I logged in to my account at 8pm to see that both proposals were accepted. I was left flabbergasted!<br />
<br />

<br />
Before then, of course is FETC. I had an amazing time last year. If you are going to FETC, so sure to <a href="http://suntansandlessonplans.blogspot.com/2014/12/fetc-discount-code.html" target="_blank">check out this post</a>. I first learned about the PBS LearningMedia Digital Innovator program at a session at FETC. If you are a teacher that is passionate about using technology in the classroom, I would highly recommend <a href="http://suntansandlessonplans.blogspot.com/2014/12/apply-to-be-2015-pbs-learningmedia.html" target="_blank">looking into this program</a>.<br />
<br />
Happy New Year! My the rest of your break have no mess and no stress!<br />

I attended the NSTA Regional Conference in Orlando early in the month. A couple of weeks later I flew to Houston to present at the NCTM Regional Conference. I have a blog post planned with my favorite finds from these two events if I can just find time to sit down and write.<br />
<br />
I love conferences. I always find such neat ideas. I actually like going to conferences enough that I have started to submit proposals to present. My school is a lot more willing to send you when you are presenting. After attending FETC last year I knew that I needed to try my best to get back again!<br />
<br />
I'd like to personally invite you to attend my session at FETC 2015, taking place January 20-23 in Orlando, Florida. Information on my session is below, along with a special registration discount of up to $110 off the Regular Conference Package Prices*.<br /><br />Mixing it up with STEAM (AS3062)<br />Date: Friday, January 23, 2015<br /><br />In this session, we will discuss how your students can mix a recycled cardboard arcade with technology including augmented reality, Google Apps, and movie making.<br />
<br />FETC is the leading international conference that brings education and technology experts together to exchange strategies and best practices for teaching and learning success—and I’m thrilled to be a part of it! Make plans now to join me and discover the future of education technology.<br /><br />Register today using my unique promo code – SPK376 – and receive $110* off the Regular Registration fee! This year I again bought 40 pumpkin from my local Walmart for the STEAM Lab pumpkin patch. This year, in an attempt to add a little more math and science, we created a "baseball card" for each pumpkin.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
Using Google Drive, <a href="https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/14650NhSJYMF9F7epE11pyxDzX3Xoi4bP8zBC_HhTUYE/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank">these pages</a> were printed and posted in the hallway. They have been a big hit! I'm already thinking about how to improve them for next year.<br />
<br />
I have a <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/suntanslsnplans/plenty-of-pumpkins/" target="_blank">Pinterest board</a> I use for inspiration. Several of the push-ins were bought last year on clearance. Instead of paining, we used colored tissue paper and a glue/water mixture. I find it stays nicer than the paint and it makes it easier to have 18-22 students participate in the decorating process. <br />
<br />
So, here are our pumpkin creations. <br />

I love the story and the idea behind Dot day. If you haven't checked it out yet, I highly recommend it!<br />
<br />
Last year my students just made dots. It was my first couple of months in the STEAM Lab, and it was my first real art project. It went well, but this year I decided to change it up a bit. My upper elementary students made STEAM Dots. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-B__eINFVnM0/VDiJUtuZ3sI/AAAAAAAAB3s/DjQH8-jHyNw/s1600/dotsscience.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-B__eINFVnM0/VDiJUtuZ3sI/AAAAAAAAB3s/DjQH8-jHyNw/s1600/dotsscience.png" height="640" width="436" /></a></div>
<br />
The science dots were made using <a href="http://www.sunprints.org/" target="_blank">sun prints</a>. The students got to find an object that would leave a "dot" shadow. Once in water the students were amazed as the colors set.<br />
<br />
This was a big hit! I have more sun print paper left over and will definitely use it again for another project later in the year. It would be a great art connection after studying our <a href="http://palmbeach.weatherstem.com/fau" target="_blank">WeatherSTEM station</a>'s UV sensor.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-l9j4X6ro79Q/VDiZDhcXzWI/AAAAAAAAB4Q/fB0btMN89Do/s1600/dotstech.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-l9j4X6ro79Q/VDiZDhcXzWI/AAAAAAAAB4Q/fB0btMN89Do/s1600/dotstech.png" height="430" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I love <a href="http://colarapp.com/" target="_blank">colAR</a>. I let all my 375+ students make one of these dots. They each got to see their dot come to life using the app. I compiled each class' dots into a book that I posted in the hallway. Augmented reality still amazes me!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1SecLp5goWE/VDiJSLp3H5I/AAAAAAAAB3M/FTgm7N1ZX7k/s1600/dotsengineering.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1SecLp5goWE/VDiJSLp3H5I/AAAAAAAAB3M/FTgm7N1ZX7k/s1600/dotsengineering.png" height="640" width="411" /></a></div>
<br />
For engineering dots, I was inspired by these <a href="http://artroom104.blogspot.ca/2014/02/5th-grade-3-d-color-wheel-tutorial.html?m=1" target="_blank">3D color wheels</a>. I wasn't picky on the colors used, but I liked the idea of students figuring out how to transform 4 paper plates into a 3D shape. Other students chose to use this <a href="http://www.korthalsaltes.com/model.php?name_en=truncated%20icosahedron" target="_blank">printable soccer ball template </a>to create a paper ball dot. Both were a litle challenging, but worked well.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qlIznSwJSxw/VDiJRwn3OyI/AAAAAAAAB3I/Uc89PmKcmBg/s1600/dotsart.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qlIznSwJSxw/VDiJRwn3OyI/AAAAAAAAB3I/Uc89PmKcmBg/s1600/dotsart.png" height="640" width="456" /></a></div>
<br />
For art dots, I left out crayons, markers, texture plates, and tempera paint. They had lots of options, but most of my artist prefer paint. I had a number of Jason Pollock inspired dots.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-D9SVtQE8VKs/VDiJTcDIdhI/AAAAAAAAB3g/npkgq7Zt_f4/s1600/dotsmath.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-D9SVtQE8VKs/VDiJTcDIdhI/AAAAAAAAB3g/npkgq7Zt_f4/s1600/dotsmath.png" height="640" width="409" /></a></div>
<br />
Math was the area I had the hardest time to figure out. I brainstormed and I provided students with die cut pattern blocks. Some students used the blocks to create dots. The more popular math dot was <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/353532639472871046/" target="_blank">compass painting</a>.<br />
<br />
My 3-5 students all made a technology dot and then got to choose one other dot to make. I'd planned to do the same with some of the younger grades but after making the colAR dots, I decided it was too much. Instead I opted to try something else.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jGE8laQx_rs/VDiJR1HRMkI/AAAAAAAAB3Q/dRcj7AWxgvk/s1600/dotsfilter1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jGE8laQx_rs/VDiJR1HRMkI/AAAAAAAAB3Q/dRcj7AWxgvk/s1600/dotsfilter1.png" height="180" width="640" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My K-2 students made these <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/353532639472880607/" target="_blank">coffee filter dots</a>. I really enjoyed the project and the finished results.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Dd3UnjQ1bIc/VDiJTGB8hqI/AAAAAAAAB3k/LcLzL8fke90/s1600/dotsfilter2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Dd3UnjQ1bIc/VDiJTGB8hqI/AAAAAAAAB3k/LcLzL8fke90/s1600/dotsfilter2.png" height="292" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
My favorite part of out Dot Day celebrations this year was having the kids work outside. We've really worked on our outdoor learning space. I love opening my back door and having students work on the patio. <br />
<br />
